Panther Tattoos

tattoo designs

With its black, shiny coat and long, lean figure, panther tattoos are an emblem for a mysterious and sensual personality. These dark creatures are also said to be a symbol of freedom, control and a stealthy, clever strength.

By far, crawling black panther tattoos are the most popular. This style is rather simple, but so large in proportion that it is usually contoured around wide areas of the body, and are frequently used to cover up older pieces of body art. The design generally features the muscular black cat prowling, claws extended, and usually with an open, growling mouth. It is not uncommon to see small bursts of colors as well; generally blues, greens, yellow gold and reds for the eyes and mouth. One idea for this design would be to show the beast literally climbing up a leg or arm; in this depiction, it could leave red claw marks behind to show the progress of its trek.

A few other designs for panther tattoos are scenes and busts. Many people like their panther tattoos to feature just the head and shoulders of the animal; these regularly show it with fangs exposed, sometimes with blood dripping from the tip. They occasionally also show the teeth appearing to rip through the skin, thus representing the ‘beast within.’ The scene styles usually show a natural motif; a full bodied panther wandering around a large, grassy wetland; lounging next to a pool of water, perhaps lazily dipping a paw into its reflection; or even climbing a tall tree.

Tribal and Chinese panther tattoos are also gaining popularity. The tribal panther is generally done in a sharp, bold outline; while the Chinese panther has full features, a vicious expression that is akin to wood block-style warriors, and long claws. These, unlike the tribal style, usually have other symbols surrounding it to create a broader theme. For instance, a crouching panther appearing to climb a frothy waterfall; the bust of a panther surrounded in bright blossoms, or interlocked with a dragon or snake. This style can also be simple, and show the panther unto itself, with a bright background of velvety reds or oranges.

Although seen as ferocious, panthers can also be gentle, and are generally calm unless their loved ones are threatened. This — with all other symbols, and artistic merit aside — may be reason enough for a person to gravitate towards panther tattoos.

Vine tattoos are great for creativity of both the wearer and the artist. These beautiful little plants are also a symbol of growth, re-growth and harmony. However, the meaning does tend to vary depending on which type of vine you use.

One of the most frequently seen vine tattoos is of the ivy plant. To the Druids the ivy was seen as a symbol of determination; to Christians it is a symbol of man’s frailty, and his need to cling for support. Most ivy vine tattoos are done in a spiraling style up a leg or arm, you may even occasionally see this style growing up the back and shoulders. Given that ivy is a notoriously good grower, you could try something a little different, like wrapping it around a statue, cross, or even the legs, hips and arms of a pin up model. You could even use a single leaf, or whole vine of poison ivy to signify both beauty and danger.

Some people prefer a wider variety of color for their vine tattoos. For this you could use large clumps of fiery red Virginia creeper over a broad area of the body; delicate sprouts of purple, red, and pink and white sweet pea; or a creeping kudzu with its royal blue, or dark purple, and tail-like blossoms. Given the vast array available, your vine tattoos can be an explosion of colors, and feature any combination of these plants; they can be done in stripes down the back, they can be mingled together, or placed in their own individual part of the body.

Vine tattoos can be either simple, or elaborate. Many people prefer a monotone approach, sometimes with just a splash of color on the flower. These are often done in small, discreet patterns; a few flowing tendrils from a grapevine (a symbol of abundance), and maybe even a small, purple bunch of the fruit alongside of it. Other people like to create broad scenes with their vine tattoos; perhaps creating an Edenic garden, with angelic creatures walking through the variety of vines. This plant is also regularly used as borders or platforms to other images, and occasionally even texts, such as poems, quotes and book passages.

Although vine tattoos can depict a simple, green plant creeping up and around an appendage, they can also be used as part of an extraordinary picture. What’s more is that you will never be short of meaning and symbolism when you use these gorgeous plants in your art.

The opinion on body art is divided within the Catholic faith; although there are statements against tattooing in the bible, many feel that so long as the imagery is not offensive, or against the beliefs set forth by the church, that body art is fine. Catholic tattoos are not, however, meant in any way to be offensive. Rather, they are meant to express a lasting devotion to the wearer’s faith.

Many Catholic tattoos feature the vast and colorful symbols that this faith is known for. Two of the most recognizable symbols are the crucifix and the sacred heart. The crucifix is often depicted in muted tones, and done in a realistic style. The sacred heart, on the other hand, is usually bold in color and either placed on its own, or at the chest of Jesus Christ. Some people may like to create a string of rosary beads around their neck or arm. One of the bolder ideas for Catholic tattoos is that of stained glass. Classic Catholic churches are widely known for their stunning statuary and windows. A unique idea would be to create an intricately placed and colored pattern that comes together to create the design of the Virgin Mary, or even a saint.

Crosses are also a regularly featured design in Catholic tattoos. Although the recognizable Latin cross is still the favored style, there are many other crosses that are used regularly by the Catholic Church, such as the Byzantine cross. This design, much like the Latin cross, has the appearance of a lowercase t; however, it features a second cross bar to bear the INRI inscription (or, “Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm” which stands for “Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum”), and a third bar to represent the Lord’s feet at rest. St. Brigid’s cross has a woven appearance and shows a small square at the center of four alternately placed arms. This design may express both devoutness, and a desire to save and comfort those in need.

Although many people are divided on the virtues of Catholic tattoos, it is undeniable that these designs often show a profound devotion that can be both beautiful and touching.
