Gargoyle Tattoos

tattoo designs

Gargoyles are something like scarecrows — their seemingly grotesque appearance are said to scare away wicked spirits and cast aside bad omens. Many people use gargoyle tattoos for this reason; as a sort of phylactery symbol.

Some people like to use the depiction often used to protect homes; a small, winged creature with a scrunched, angry-looking face, spouting water from between its lips. It is said that once the water gushes from the gargoyle’s mouth it becomes sacred and is turned into holy water. These images are usually done in dark, granite colors; occasionally, though, they sport blues, reds and purples. One interesting idea is to place this protective symbol on the shoulder, with water dripping down the arm, front or back of the body.

Gargoyle tattoos may also feature script writing. It is not unusual to see a Gothic plaque with a famous poem, or quote and a large, looming gargoyle seemingly engraved into the skin. As most medieval European cathedrals heavily adorned their gargoyles with etched flowers and fresh ivy, it might be interesting to add similar touches to this particular piece.

Some gargoyle tattoos are a mixture of creatures. Several European churches used gargoyles that carried the appearance of cats, boars and rams. One of the more popular combinations is the chimera. Though not a gargoyle in the traditional sense, the famous combination of lion and eagle, makes it an equally fearsome design. It is also quite common to mix gargoyles with demons, devils and sometimes even angels.

Gargoyle statues have been used for many years as protection for a persons’ home, it stands to reason that gargoyle tattoos — whether by themselves or placed amongst other symbols of safety — can be equally effective at protecting their wearers.

Gargoyle Tattoos

To many folks, demon tattoos have significant negative connotations; but to others, demons may be a symbol of the struggle between good and evil. Over time the image of demons has gone from being an emblem of both the good and bad in the divine, to being simply a satanic figure. To other people, demon tattoos may simply be a symbol of their own mischievous nature, or show a connection that they feel to the darker things in life.

Most demon tattoos show the darker side to this image. These figures are usually shown in monotone colors, but when colored they are frequently seen in bold reds, greens and blues. This demon is normally similar in outline to a filled out version of a skull and bones. The teeth are exposed in a menacing grin, and the eyes are sunken in. Another version of this demon is the large, muscular equivalent. Unlike its more skeletal brethren, this version has a large, square-jawed face. However, in both cases, these demons sport a very characteristic waggish grin, which is meant to depict the playfully deleterious nature of this particular creature. This variety of tattoo usually features other symbols such as flames, weapons, barbed wire, tears and even occasionally religious symbols.

There is also a call for cheekier demon tattoos. These are quite often seen in a cartoon style, and tend to show a more cherubic depiction of this figure. These images are usually seen as little red creatures with horns and a forked tail, usually holding a pitchfork, and dressed in children’s garb. They also bear a naughty expression, as if on the verge of doing something bad and enjoying it.

Many people also like demon tattoos that show the war between good and evil. You can use a scene akin to classic paintings, which depict a strong, malevolent demon locked in battle with a righteous, winged angel. These images usually show the two characters in a realistic-looking manner, and are generally set in a scene of either a blue and cloudy heaven, or red and fiery hell.

There is multitude of variations in demon tattoos. You must decide what you want to express with this piece — the impishness of your personality, or your darker side of it.

Demon Tattoos

Fire has a dual nature; it can help sustain life by keeping it warm, lighting a dark path and even defending the person who can harness it. At the same time it can also be destructive. Many people use fire as a symbol of this duality; they use it to express passion and transformation. Fire tattoos are often used as a medium to display these feelings.

Although fire tattoos can have many symbols to go alongside them, fire unto itself can make fantastic designs. Many of these styles are large; for example, a shoulder plate of fireball-type flames. Another great idea is to create a square or circular mosaic of varying shades of heat (that is blue, white, and red and orange flames). It would even be possible to have a trail of fire going around the body; some people like to use armbands featuring a sweeping flame all around the upper arm. It might also be a unique idea to utilize some of the earliest depictions of fire. Some of the earliest paintings were found in caves, and they often portrayed images of the elements. Though these may seem like crude representations, they can create a bit of novelty to your piece.

Usually, though, people prefer fire tattoos that depict more than just the flames. These tattoos can have a variety of meanings, and incorporate fire simply as a means to express their strong feelings for the other symbols. For instance, flames are regularly shown surrounding a heart. This can mean a passionate love, or — as in the case of the sacred heart — a passion for their religious devotion. Another example of using fire alongside symbology is the phoenix. The phoenix is a favored design for those who have been through a traumatic experience and feel they have been reborn because of it. This creature is regularly depicted in a state of conflagration, beginning to turn into the ashes that it will soon rise from.

Fire tattoos are a great way to express strength, sensuality and fervor. Be certain that your passions last as long as your art does by using this design as a reminder.
